It’s safe to say, you’ll be comfortable.

Comfort and safety are of top priority, especially when it comes to the smallest members of the family. That is why the new Audi I-SIZE child seats were developed in accordance with the UNECE regulation on child seat approval ECE-R129.

As a prerequisite to their approval, child seats must fulfil particularly high safety requirements and standards. This is regulated by the European Union. Advances in research into accidents have enabled new findings to be made about child safety in road traffic. The result is the UNECE regulation on child seat approval ECE-R129, which requires more protection for children in the car and simplifies the compatibility between child seats and vehicles.

I-SIZE is the first phase of this new regulation and is based on the following five points:

  • Rear-facing travel is obligatory for children up to 15 months:
This offers improved protection in cases of impact from the side or front, as well as significantly more protection for the head and neck area, since the force of an impact is spread over a larger area.
  • Classification according to body size:
This serves to improve the fit of the child seat and should discourage premature switching to the seat next up in size, as well as simplifying the process of choosing the right child seat.
  • Child seats must pass side impact tests
  • Reduction in the risk of incorrect installation by promoting use of the ISOFIX system:
As a result of the ISOFIX system and click installation, the risk of fitting the child seat incorrectly in the vehicle is lowered. Connecting the child seat to the vehicle body via the ISOFIX anchor points considerably increases stability and protection.
  • I-SIZE child seats are compatible with almost all ISOFIX and I-SIZE cars:
This is why the Audi baby seat i-Size and the Audi child seat i-Size have been reinforced by airpads in the head and chest area. The Audi baby seat i-Size has been upgraded with additional padding for transporting very small babies and is suitable for use on aircraft seats. The Audi child seat i-Size can now also be tilted when in the forwards-facing position. The different shape and new support stand of the i-Size base provide an even better fit.

The new UNECE regulation on child seat approval ECE-R129 does not replace the previous ECE-R44. The two apply simultaneously.

If you already own a child seat

Existing child seats with approval according to ECE-R44/03 may continue to be used unaltered. There are no current plans for a ban. Only child seats which do not meet the testing standard ECE-R44/03 (the number under an "E" in the test seal on the child seat must begin with 03 or 04) may no longer be used as of April 2008. All Audi child seats available in the past have met the testing standard ECE-R44.

If you need a new child seat

Child seats which are bought new may be approved according to either ECE-R44 or the new regulation ECE-R129. Child seats that are approved according to ECE-R129 can be fitted on seats in vehicles that have the I-SIZE classification. The seats can also be fitted in vehicles that have been authorised in the type list by the child seat manufacturer.
